Environmental Portraiture

An environmental portrait isn’t just a photo with a background. It’s a portrait of context.

Where your subject stands changes everything. Leonardo knew this intuitively — his landscapes weren’t filler; they were emotional backdrops. In photography, a messy bedroom, a sunlit cafe, a rain-drenched alley all shape narrative.

Shoot wide enough to let the environment speak. Let the light in that room guide your exposure. Ask your subject to interact with the space: sit, lean, touch, move. Watch how the location reflects their story. Is it harmony or contrast?
